Asian Wrestling Championship 2019

The Asian Wrestling Championship 2019 was held in Xi’an, China from April 23 to April 28, 2019. India won 16 medals which include 1 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze by men’s freestyle wrestlers, 3 silver and 1 bronze by men’s Greco-Roman wrestlers and 4 bronze won by women’s freestyle wrestlers. India ranked 8th place in the tournament and the first three countries ranked in the tournament were Iran followed by China and Japan.

Highlights
Bajrang Punia bags gold in 65-kg Category
i.A 25-year old Bajrang Punia, from Haryana defeated Kazakhstan’s Sayatbek Okassov by 12-7 in 65 kg men’s free style.
ii.This was India’s fifth medal and the only gold medal in Asian Wrestling Championship 2019.
iii.Previously, Punia won gold medal in Asian Wrestling Championship 2017 and bronze medal in 2018.

About Asian Wrestling Championship
The Asian Wrestling Championship was organized by the Asian Associated Wrestling Committee (AAWC). The men’s tournament started in 1979 and the women’s tournament in 1996 and after that the Asian Wrestling Championship has been held every year. The Asian Wrestling Championship 2018 took place at the Kozhomkul Sports Palace, Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan from February 27 to March 4, 2018.
